12 Augus 2010, London

The cost of parking in a public car park has increased by an average of 12.5% across the UK in the past 12 months, according to new research carried out by online private parking marketplace ParkatmyHouse.

The comprehensive survey looked at the average cost to park a vehicle for one hour in a council or commercial car park, and the percentage increase in car parking prices over the past year, in the main UK towns and cities.

Not surprisingly, London topped the survey as the most expensive city or town to park, with an average cost of £4.03 for one hour's parking in one of the city's public car parks - that is an increase of 14.1% compared to the average price for a London car park in 2009.

The next most expensive town or city to park in the UK, are Edinburgh and Brighton, with one hour's parking in a public car park likely to set a driver back £2.45 and £2.18 respectively. They are followed by Oxford and Reading at £2.16.

At the other end of the scale, the West Yorkshire town of Halifax is the cheapest place for car parking in the UK, with one hour's parking in a public car park costing on average £0.41. The next cheapest locations were the market town of Macclesfield (£0.51) and the Welsh city of Bangor (£0.55).

The following table lists the top ten most expensive UK towns and cities in terms of car parking prices:-

City/Town Average Cost (for 1hrs car parking)
London £4.03
Edinburgh £2.45
Brighton £2.18
Oxford £2.16
Reading £2.16
Manchester £2.16
Newcastle £1.89
Cardiff £1.88
Middlesbrough £1.79
Leeds £1.73

Of the major UK cities, Manchester has seen average car parking prices rise from £1.93 for an hour's parking in 2009, to £2.16 in 2010, an increase of 11.9%. While, the average price of an hour's parking in a car park in Birmingham has increased by 8.8% from £1.37 to £1.49.

Anthony Eskinazi, Founder of ParkatmyHouse, comments:

"Households are finding that their finances are being squeezed from all directions and the fact that car parking costs have increased significantly over the past 12 months, has probably slipped below their radar. We have seen a significant uplift in private parking space bookings that are not only cheaper but also provide a much more convenient parking solution than most commercial car parks."
