Background information about ParkatmyHouse
You've arrived - but where do you park? Cost, availability, proximity to your final location, the potential for fines or clamping as well as personal security issues are just some of the stresses motorists increasingly face as our need for car transport collides with the reality of limited space and ever-increasing cost.
ParkatmyHouse (www.parkatmyhouse.com) is an innovative online marketplace founded to connect home and business owners who would like to earn money from renting their space with drivers in need of a convenient, safe and cost-effective place to park.
In most of Britain's big cities parking near mainline railway stations, hospitals, airports, sporting and music events or tourist attractions, can be an expensive proposition. Increased traffic on our roads combined with insufficient on-street parking and monthly car park charges ranging from more than £350 per month in London to upwards of £150 elsewhere, translates into motorists being hard squeezed from both an availability and financial perspective.
And for the tourist or holiday-maker, parking represents a hidden holiday cost which can add a hefty 10-20% to their total travel costs.
ParkatmyHouse offers an easy to use instant online facility to book a property-owner's driveway, garage or car parking space on a one-off or regular, short-term or long-term basis. Property owners are able to realise a profit from a previously un-thought of asset while drivers secure a preferred parking space.
But the benefits don't stop there. Many ParkatmyHouse customers enjoy a personal meet and greet service, free transfers to and from the airport or a much welcome cup of tea/coffee upon arrival home from holiday.
ParkatmyHouse already has tens of thousands of members throughout the UK and continues to experience steady and significant growth in its membership base. While the UK currently represents ParkatmyHouse.com's main market, the company is making inroads into Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and even has a space to rent near the North Pole.
Despite the growing number of people who are walking, cycling or using public transport to reach their destinations, the UK Department of Transport predicts that car ownership will soar by 45 per cent in the next twenty five years. With the unrivalled safety and flexibility that private travel offers, cars, in one form or another, are here to stay.
With that in mind, you can't help but raise your eyebrows and wonder how all the extra cars are going to be accommodated. Space is becoming less readily available. It is, after all, a finite commodity and it's in huge demand as a result of fast-paced development and changing demographic trends - like the building of new housing to accommodate the growing population.
ParkatmyHouse confronts the reality of car use and promotes space-efficient parking by tapping into a readily available but unexploited resource.
By enabling and encouraging compact, off-road parking, ParkatmyHouse helps prevent parked vehicles from clogging up the streets and contributing to congestion. This in turn makes roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists and improves accessibility for public transport and emergency vehicles.
We also hope that ParkatmyHouse will help cut down the amount of carbon emitted by vehicles circumnavigating areas in search of a parking space. You've probably never given it a thought but you'd be amazed at how much extra energy we burn as we drive round the block looking for a spot and queue to get into car parks. Cumulatively, it all adds up.
On a similar note, if property-owners use ParkatmyHouse to make spaces available and parking easy for drivers around major public transport hubs, the service will help promote so-called 'integrated travel' whereby people use their car for one part of their journey before parking it and hopping on the bus, train or tube to reach their destination. That's much better for carbon emissions than driving the whole way.
And last but not least, if ParkatmyHouse can preserve land by reducing the need to concrete over green turf and build new parking facilities, we'd be very happy.
About the founder
In May 2006, towards the end of his post university 'Round-the-World' trip, ParkatmyHouse founder, Anthony Eskinazi, was on his way to the AT&T stadium in San Francisco to watch a Giants baseball game. As any sports fan knows, trying to find a parking space near a stadium on a match day is often a futile exercise!
So, when he saw an empty driveway a stone's throw away from the stadium he realised that there was a great opportunity for both homeowners and drivers if only they could find a way of making the initial contact.
After Anthony returned to the UK in June 2006, he started work on the first version of ParkatmyHouse After many hours in front of the computer and brainstorming with close friends and family, ParkatmyHouse finally opened to the public on 22nd September 2006.
