Mitcham is an attractive south London suburb that offers affordable houses coupled with wild green spaces. It covers a large area between tooting to the north Morden to the west Thornton heath to the east and Croydon to the south. Once famous for its farms growing mint and lavender the town became an important industrial centre from the end of the 18th century until the sixties. At one time the river wandle which flows into the Thames at wandsworth and passes through mitcham had 19 mills along its 11 mile length producing everything from snuff and corn to dyes gunpowder and printed calico for which it became world famous. There are reminders of the pre industrial mitcham in the humble weather boarded cottages the can still be seen in the town centre; the pretty row of fisherman’s cottages near the national trust owned water meads on the river wandle and eagle house, a fine Queen Anne mansion. The cricket green is close by and still has the feel of a tranquil surrey village. Cricket has been played here since 1730 and the club claims to be the oldest in Britain. Nominated as a site metropolitan importance for nature conservation, there is an ecology centre and an 18 hole golf course. The train line runs through Mitcham, connecting it to Croydon and Wimbledon, and the station is one of the oldest in the world. It was on the route of the first passenger carrying service, the Surrey Iron Railway.
